Finer cement offers a greater surface area for hydration and hence the faster and greater the development of strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"171\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zillionsbuyer.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Fineness-testing.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1428\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fineness of cement is tested in two ways<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(a) By sieving Test<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(b) By determination of specific surface\n(total surface area of all the particles in one gram of cement) by air\npermeability apparatus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>a)\nSieve Test:<\/strong> Weigh correctly 100 gms of cement and\ntake it on a standard I.S sieve No. 9 (90m). Break down the air set lumps in\nthe sample with fingers. Continuously sieve the sample giving circular and\nvertical motion for 15 minutes. Weigh the residue left on the sieve This weight\nis called &#8220;Fineness of cement&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fineness of cement &gt; 10% for O.P.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fineness of cement is also estimated in\nterms of specific surface area per unit weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fineness of cement for O.P.C. = 2250 cm2\/\ngm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>(b.)\nAir permeability method.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be done by lea and Nurse\npermeability Apparatus.\n\nThis apparatus can be used for measuring the\nspecific surface of cement. The principle is based on the relation between the\nflow of air through the cement bed and the surface area of the particles\ncomprising the cement bed. From this the surface area per unit weight of the\nbody material can be related to the permeability of a bed of a given porosity.\nThe cement bed in the permeability cell is I cm high and 2.5 cm in diameter.\nKnowing the density of content the weight required to make a cement bed of\nporosity of 0.475 can becalculate This quantity of cement is placed in the\npermeability cell inStandard manner. Slowly pass on air through the cement bed\nat a constant velocity Adjust the rate of air flow until the flowmeter shows a\ndifference in level of 30-50 cm. Read the difference in level (h) of the\nmanometer and the difference in level (of the flowmeter.
